St Martin de Porres Parish
is one among other early Parishes to be established in and around Bulawayo.
It was built in 1960 under the influence of Rev. Fr. Sixtus Impler (CMM)
from Germany. Before construction of the Church building, services were
initially conducted in the Rangemore School in 1958 and subsequently in
1959 in a metal shed under a tree in the Church grounds. Since then the
Parish had been a sub-station of St Anthony's Parish, Barham Green until
late 2001. Geographically the Church is situated in Rangemore , a peri-urban
farming area 16 kilometers south-west from the heart of the City of Kings,
Bulawayo.
The Church ground was
donated by Mr Joseph Fynn. The fact that it has been a sub-station to
another parish, its parish leaders had never had any chance of
participating in such afford which
in my view disadvantaged them a lot. This truly has been a stumbling block
to witness the ongoing formation in this parish instead the number of
parishioners continued to diminish to some extent that a Sunday service
could be around a two digit figure of parishioners.
The situation started to
improve in the mid 1990's after the development of the Emganwini
Residential area where quite a handful of Catholics attending Church at
this parish come from. Because the Community continued to grow
significantly, Parish Priest of The Holy Family Parish, Rev. Fr. Tadeusz
Grenda SVD advocated for the merger of the Emganwini - Holy Family serviced
Catholics with the Rangemore, St Martin serviced Catholics. This
necessitated the application for a new and bigger stand at Emganwini for
the new community which could not fit in the Church at St Martin de Porres,
Rangemore. The stand was officially leased to the Church in October 2000
and the merger of these two communities was completed in December 2001,
when a new Priest Fr. Zbigniew Oldynski SVD took over charge of these
two Parishes.
Since 2002 Fr. Maciek Malicki
SVD
is serving our Parish, St Martin the Porres.
18.07.2004 – we opened a new,
bigger church. We are again an independent Parish.
